I drove a CUV like a race car today and I didn't hate it

Let's clear the air. I don't like CUV's. I'll never buy one for a host of reasons. BUT despite my natural prejudice, I came to like the little Fiat 500X. I drove the snot out of this little red CUV in the canyon roads surrounding LA and came away impressed with it dynamically.

Yes, a car would have been much better but I've piloted all manner of CUV's including a Nismo Juke and this one tops them all for sheer fun. It drives like a porky hot hatch... Because it kinda is.

It didn't understeer quickly and rotated very well mid-corner. The brakes didn't melt from abuse (Like so happened with a Chevy Equinox) and the auto-trans didn't go into limp mode from all the full throttle pulls. (Like so happened with a Ford Escape)

IN SUMMARY: If you need a CUV to bomb down canyon roads in, the 500X gets my hearty vote.

I drove a juke NISMO 6-MT. the shifter and clutch felt very unnatural, but it was a blast to chuck about. still has my vote for best CUV

Mark my words the Fat Hatch is going to be the new crossover. The "SUV shaped" crossovers of the recent past that were meant to at least evoke the feeling of a true suv will be giving way to what will essentially be mildly lifted Hatchbacks and wagons with AWD.

Like I posted in your other thread, this is on my gf's list of possible next vehicles. Or rather, my list of possible vehicles that will fulfill what I know she wants because she can't be bothered to worry about her next car while she's still got a year and change left on the lease on her current Civic.

Fat hatch CUVs are perfect for her because she dislikes big vehicles, really likes good mpg and cargo space, and wants AWD for our Wisconsin winters so she can feel confident while not having to mess with snow tires. (I persuaded her to do snow tires on a previous vehicle but she despises having stacks of tires in our garage and I create enough stacks of tires on my own.) She also really wants power/heated seats and a sunroof. All in all, nothing particularly hard to fulfill.

So far the Honda HR-V is the front runner. With the contrasting leather the interior looks pretty nice actually, and it ticks all the items on the list. So far everything else I've shown her, either hasn't really excited her, or has some stupid little thing that will get annoying over time.

The Chevy Trax/Buick Encore have manual recline levers on their power seats.

The Mazda CX-3 would seem to be just as likely a candidate as the HR-V, but it has no damn armrest between the front seats. She really likes armrests. How does a 2016 model year mainstream vehicle not have an armrest???

The Jeep Renegade she's not sold on the styling, and to get the options she wants means going up to the 2.4 tigershark which gets worse mpg. (21/24/29 mpg vs 27/29/32 for the HR-V) Even if the 1.4 turbo were available with the higher trims, it takes premium, and I think only comes with the manual transmission and she doesn't drive stick.

She really liked the overall looks of the 500X, but I think it's the same problem as the Renegade when it comes to powertrain.
